"JDM experience" is one of the most searched phrases by car fans planning a trip to Japan — and one of the most misunderstood. This guide explains what a JDM experience in Tokyo actually is, the four ways to get one, what each costs in 2026, and why a passenger night tour to Daikoku PA is the option most visitors end up choosing. Written by the photographer behind @stututu_club_tokyo_, who has shot 50+ Daikoku nights since 2023.
JDM stands for Japanese Domestic Market — cars built for sale in Japan rather than for export. A JDM experience is time spent inside that culture: riding in or driving the cars themselves (GT-R, Skyline, Supra, RX-7, Silvia), on the roads they were built for (the Shuto Expressway, Rainbow Bridge, the Bayshore Route), and at the place where owners gather at night, Daikoku PA.
In practice the phrase covers very different products, from a ¥3,000 go-kart in a costume to a ¥180,000 private supercar night. The table below sorts them out.
| Type | Licence | Price / person | Daikoku PA? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Passenger JDM night tour (this site) | Not needed | ¥15,000–¥35,000 | Yes, 1 hour | Most visitors; first-timers; families; photographers |
| Self-drive JDM rental | IDP (1949 Geneva) required | ¥30,000–¥100,000+ plus deposit | Only if you navigate there yourself | Confident drivers with a valid IDP and time to plan |
| Street go-kart | IDP required | ¥10,000–¥15,000 | No (surface streets only) | A fun photo op — not real JDM cars |
| Visiting a car meet alone | Not needed | Free + taxi ¥15,000–¥20,000 each way | Yes, if you can get there | Budget travellers who already know the scene |
🔑 The licence problem. Japan only recognises International Driving Permits issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Visitors from Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Taiwan, Monaco and Slovenia need a certified Japanese translation instead, and holders of 1968 Vienna Convention permits cannot legally drive at all. A passenger JDM experience sidesteps this entirely — which is why it is the default choice.
Our standard JDM experience is a 3-hour night tour that runs every evening of the year. You ride shotgun; a driver from the scene handles the car.
Itinerary: 8:00 PM pickup in Shibuya → 8:40 PM Rainbow Bridge → 9:00–10:00 PM Daikoku PA (one full hour at the car meet) → 10:40 PM Tokyo Tower → around 11:00 PM finish. Shinjuku pickup is available on request.
Cars: Nissan GT-R R35, Skyline GT-R R34, Toyota Supra, Mazda RX-7, Nissan Silvia S15, Chaser, 180SX, Lancer Evolution. Family groups ride in a 7-seat Toyota Alphard or Hiace. Supercar nights use a red Ferrari 488 GTB or matte-black Lamborghini Revuelto.
Included: English-speaking driver, expressway tolls, fuel, guest photos taken during the tour, and live rerouting to Tatsumi PA if police close Daikoku PA that night. There is no weekend surcharge.
| Option | Vehicle | Per person |
|---|---|---|
| Family / Van JDM Experience | Toyota Alphard or Hiace (up to 7) | ¥15,000 · under 6 free |
| JDM Sports Car Experience | Silvia S15, Chaser, 180SX, Lancer Evo | ¥25,000 |

Daikoku PA is a parking area under the Bayshore Route interchange in Yokohama. On a normal night between 9 and 10 PM you will see GT-Rs, Supras, RX-7s, kaido racers, VIP sedans and itasha side by side — a cross-section of Japanese car culture that no museum can reproduce. It can only be entered by car, which is why visitors cannot simply take a train there. Read Is Daikoku PA worth it? and the field notes from 97 recorded nights before you go.
Police occasionally close the area without notice. We track closures in real time and reroute to Tatsumi PA, so the JDM experience happens regardless — see Daikoku PA vs Tatsumi PA.
